Nashville Predators prospect Austin Roest took to Instagram this week to share a heartfelt message for his girlfriend Milly Okabe, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a aggressive form of cancer that targets glandular tissues.
A Personal Journey
The couple, who have been together for more than three years, are described as having a loving and supportive relationship. Okabe, a 22‑year‑old former figure skater, is widely recognized in her community for her kindness, strength and selflessness.
Roest, also 22, entered the professional ranks after being selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators. Since then he has appeared for the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals and the ECHL’s Atlanta Gladiators, showcasing his development as a young defenseman.
In response to Okabe’s diagnosis, Roest posted two photographs taken at her hospital bedside, using the platform to draw attention to a GoFundMe campaign that was created to help cover her treatment costs, travel, medication and other financial needs. The fundraiser has already surpassed the $50,000 mark, providing a substantial boost to the family’s efforts during this challenging time.
Roest’s public appeal not only highlights his personal commitment to his partner but also underscores the broader support network that has rallied around Okabe and her family as they navigate the medical journey.
