A Summer Initiative on Concrete
Fargo Parks and the West Fargo Park District have introduced NHL Street, a ball hockey league that transforms summer afternoons into a vibrant hockey experience on concrete surfaces. The program, designed for children between five and fourteen, replaces the traditional ice rink with a durable pavement arena, using a ball instead of a puck to keep the game accessible and safe.
Sticks and optional goalie gear are supplied by the park districts, and the arena is divided into smaller sections to accommodate multiple games simultaneously. This setup not only maximizes participation but also allows younger players to experience a structured yet relaxed environment.
Engaging Young Players
The league offers divisions for U8, U10, U12 and U14 age groups, with approximately thirty participants in the Fargo segment and more than one hundred in West Fargo. Helmets are mandatory, providing an extra layer of protection for the enthusiastic crowd. Both leagues emphasize a blend of seasoned players and newcomers, creating a community where experienced teammates can mentor those just discovering the sport.
Randi Litchy, recreation supervisor for Fargo Parks, explains that the primary goal is to engage kids in hockey while giving them productive summer activities. "We want to teach the fundamentals, but above all we want them to have fun," she says, highlighting the program's focus on learning through play.
Growth and Expansion Plans
Organizers anticipate a steady rise in participation as awareness spreads throughout the region. West Fargo officials are already scouting additional rinks to host the growing number of teams, and practices are scheduled twice a week to balance skill development with recreational enjoyment. The initiative also reflects a broader effort to diversify youth sports offerings in the area.
