A New Chapter for the Aztecs
Nick Heinle, a familiar face on the sidelines, has been named interim head coach of the Esperanza High School football program after JP Presley stepped down following four seasons. Heinle, who honed his craft as defensive coordinator under Presley, also brings playing experience from Fountain Valley High and Chapman University to the role.
Keri Walters, previously an athletic director in the Placentia‑Yorba Linda district, will serve as interim athletic director while the school conducts a national search for a permanent coach. Walters’ appointment was announced by Principal Kelly Molina in a communication to players and families.
The Aztecs finished the last season with a 4‑6 record and missed the playoffs, a result that has spurred the administration to act quickly. Molina’s email highlighted Heinle’s leadership and the staff’s commitment to aligning on a vision for summer camp and beyond.
Esperanza’s football legacy includes four CIF‑SS championships, the most recent in 2019, and the program will now compete in the newly structured Kappa League beginning in the 2026‑27 school year. The school has already posted an opening for a permanent head coach as it balances interim leadership with long‑term planning.
Looking Ahead to 2026‑27
While Heinle and Walters step into interim capacities, the broader community remains hopeful. The upcoming Kappa League promises a fresh competitive landscape, and the interim leadership hopes to lay groundwork for a sustained return to prominence.
