Nicole Miller Leads Columbia Field Hockey to Historic Milestones

The new head coach's impact on the Lions' program and player achievements

Nicole Miller stepped onto the campus of Columbia University in August 2024, taking the reins as the program’s seventh head field hockey coach.

A New Era for Columbia Field Hockey

Her tenure at Wagner College had already marked her as a rising talent, guiding the Seahawks to three consecutive Northeast Conference Tournament appearances and compiling a 19‑8 record in conference play.

At Columbia, Miller’s impact was immediate. The Lions captured their first Ivy League Tournament berth in program history, and they opened the season with a 3‑0 upset of No. 18 UAlbany, the first victory over a ranked opponent since 2019.

Player Accolades

Forward Jacinta Solari Etcheberry earned Second Team All‑Ivy League honors for the second straight season, while goalkeeper Margot Houle was named Honorable Mention after posting a league‑leading 102 saves and an average of 6.87 stops per game.

In goal, Katie Wimmer distinguished herself as the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year. She ranked second nationally in save percentage (.824) and fourth in saves per game (8.1), finishing the year with 122 stops — a conference high and a top‑five national total.

All‑Ivy recognition for the 2024 squad also included Wimmer on the First Team, Solari Etcheberry on the Second Team, and Lindsey Yu earning Honorable Mention.

Beyond the field, Miller brought a strong developmental focus. She previously served as an assistant at Sacred Heart under Sydney Van Der Merwe, where she helped drive a 62.5 % increase in goals from 2017 to 2018 and oversaw a staff that posted the second‑highest GPA among Division I field hockey programs.

Her recruiting work attracted more than ten high‑school commitments, and 20 of her 24 student‑athletes earned NFHCA All‑Academic Team honors.

Miller’s own playing pedigree runs deep. At UMass Amherst she was a cornerstone of three Atlantic 10 Championship teams and three NCAA Tournament appearances, captaining the side in her junior and senior years and being named to the All‑Tournament team in her final season.
