Nigeria Football Federation in Turmoil
Nigeria’s football governing body is confronting a leadership vacuum after President Ibrahim Gusau resigned amid intense scrutiny over the country’s recent failures to qualify for major tournaments.
Secretary‑General Mohammed Sanusi also resigned, and the federation has now set up a fact‑finding committee to examine the root causes of the recent downturn.
A Double Setback
Both the men’s Super Eagles and the women’s Super Falcons suffered decisive defeats in their latest qualification attempts. The Eagles were eliminated after a 4‑3 penalty shoot‑out loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the Falcons fell 2‑1 to South Africa in an intercontinental playoff for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The setbacks represent a stark reversal for teams that once enjoyed regular participation on the world stage; the Super Falcons, in particular, had qualified for every Women’s World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
In response, the Nigeria Football Federation announced a comprehensive review and pledged to implement reforms aimed at restoring competitiveness and rebuilding confidence among fans and stakeholders.
