Revitalising the Game
President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the rehabilitation of key sporting facilities, including a comprehensive upgrade of the national hockey pitch to meet international standards, a move seen as pivotal for the sport’s growth.
The inaugural 2026 Nigeria Hockey Super League was hailed as a milestone, aligning with a broader vision of a vibrant sports economy; Kada Stars and Kada Queens secured their respective titles, underscoring the competitiveness of domestic competition.
However, the venue that once hosted the 2003 All Africa Games now falls short of modern specifications, prompting urgent calls for its modernization to sustain elite-level play.
Investment and Institutional Support
Abdul Ningi, chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, urged increased funding across all sporting federations, arguing that sustained investment is essential to translate ambition into lasting success.
Simeon Nkom, president of the Nigeria Hockey Federation, described the Super League as the most successful championship to date, noting the presence of the NSC chairman, the African Hockey Federation president, sponsors, partners and media as a clear sign of the sport’s rising profile.
With government backing, upgraded facilities and a thriving league, Nigerian hockey appears poised to cement its place on the continental stage, promising a new era of achievement and participation.
