Nikola “Niki” Genadiev, a senior winger for Shorewood High School, has been named The Herald’s 2026 Boys Soccer Player of the Year, capping a season that blended offensive firepower with leadership.
He finished the year with 20 goals and 18 assists, delivered a decisive contribution in a state quarterfinal comeback over Eastside Catholic and even scored a hat trick in a semifinal while nursing an injury.
A season defined by resilience
Genadiev’s path to this accolade was anything but smooth. A sports hernia sidelined him for much of his junior year, forcing a lengthy rehabilitation that tested both his physical limits and mental resolve.
When he returned, he embraced a new role on the right wing after previously playing a more defensive position, adapting his game and emerging as a more versatile threat.
Leadership and team impact
Coach Shaun Warner praised the senior’s personality and work ethic, noting that his presence lifted the entire squad and helped Shorewood secure its fourth straight District 1 title.
Beyond the statistics, Genadiev’s leadership was evident in how he mentored younger teammates and fostered a culture of accountability that persisted throughout the campaign.
Looking ahead
Following graduation, Genadiev plans to take a gap year while continuing to play for Seattle United, using the upcoming national competition as a platform to attract college recruiters.
His ultimate goal is to translate his high school success into the next level of collegiate soccer, a prospect that feels both exciting and attainable after a season that proved his capacity for growth.
