A Season of Firsts
The 2026 campaign will be remembered not only for its on‑field dominance but also for the academic caliber of the Northern Illinois University baseball roster. For the sixth straight year, at least eight Huskies have been selected to the Mid‑American Conference’s Academic All‑MAC Team, underscoring the program’s commitment to scholarship as well as competition.
The squad finished the season with a school‑record 36 victories, captured the MAC championship for the first time in program history, and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament — the first appearance since 1972. Their blend of athletic prowess and classroom achievement has placed NIU among the nation’s most balanced collegiate programs.
Academic All‑MAC Honorees
Eight players received the prestigious Academic All‑MAC distinction, meeting the conference’s rigorous standards of a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA and participation in at least half of the team’s games. Among them, juniors Cooper Cohn and Charlie Parcell secured their second career honors, while seniors Nick Bassi and John Lyman added to their collections of accolades.
Freshmen and transfer newcomers also made their mark. Sophomores Carter Cox and Nolan Sandee earned their inaugural selections, as did seniors Will Couchman and Danny Cihocki, who contributed significantly both on the mound and at the plate.
Standout Performances
Cohn’s pitching brilliance shone throughout the season, culminating in a MAC Tournament appearance where he threw eight shutout innings and was named to the All‑Tournament Team. Parcell, a workhorse who started all 53 games, ranked second on the team in stolen bases with 18 and delivered a career‑high 10 strikeouts in a recent outing.
Bassi and Lyman anchored the bullpen, each posting two saves while striking out 23 batters combined in limited innings. Their relief efforts helped preserve leads during critical stretches of the schedule.
Cihocki emerged as a defensive stalwart, leading the Huskies with 92.2 innings pitched and earning a spot on the All‑MAC Defensive Team. His performance earned him MAC Co‑Pitcher of the Week honors after a dominant start against Presbyterian.
Offensively, Couchman batted .242 across 33 games, delivering four home runs and 21 RBIs, while Sandee posted a .300 average with a .470 on‑base percentage and contributed four RBIs in the team’s historic 12‑10 victory over Coastal Carolina, the program’s first NCAA Tournament win.
Looking Ahead
The combination of academic recognition and championship success signals a turning point for NIU baseball. With a core of scholar‑athletes poised to return next season, the program aims to build on its momentum, targeting further MAC titles and deeper NCAA Tournament runs while maintaining its high academic standards.
