A Comeback for the Ages
The Northern Illinois University baseball squad etched a milestone into program history on Tuesday, capturing its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 12-10 triumph over Coastal Carolina in the Tallahassee Regional.
Offensive Explosion
What made the win even more remarkable was the offensive fireworks: eight of the nine starters recorded hits, and every Husky in the lineup touched base, turning a modest rally into a decisive surge. Nolan Sandee was a catalyst, delivering two hits, two walks and four RBI that matched his season high, while Caden Robertson drove in three runs, all of which came during an eight-run fourth inning that flipped the game on its head.
The momentum shift began when the Huskies erased a 4-0 early hole, seizing the lead in the top of the fourth. Relief pitcher Cooper Cohn then shut down a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, striking out two while preserving the edge.
Danny Cihocki earned the win with 2.1 innings of work, his seventh victory of the season, and Carter Cox closed it out with 1.1 innings that produced three strikeouts for his first save. The team will now travel to face St. John's on Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT, a matchup that could extend the Huskies' surprising run.
