NMU to Raise Banners for Hockey Legends in 50th Anniversary Season

Don Waddell, Tom Laidlaw and Steve Bozek will be honored with a historic ceremony during the opening game against Miami of Ohio

A Historic Tribute

Northern Michigan University will make history this fall by hoisting three banners to the rafters of the Berry Events Center, marking the first time the program has retired the colors of any of its former stars. The tribute coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Wildcats’ inaugural season and will be woven into the opening game against Miami of Ohio on October 2, 2026.

The honorees — Don Waddell, Tom Laidlaw and Steve Bozek — were pillars of a team that reached the 1980 NCAA championship game and helped lay the foundation for a program that would later capture four CCHA regular‑season titles. Waddell’s 1978 campaign earned him CCHA Player of the Year, while Laidlaw’s leadership as captain and his Hall of Fame induction in 1990 underscored his impact. Bozek’s offensive brilliance, highlighted by a junior‑year scoring title and Hobey Baker Award finalist honors, remains etched in school records.

The ceremony will be preceded by a luncheon and social gathering, giving fans and alumni a chance to celebrate the trio’s contributions before the pregame festivities. Ticket packages for the season opener are on sale, allowing supporters to witness the banner‑raising live.

Legacy on the Ice

Waddell, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1978, later transitioned to executive roles with the Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets, while Laidlaw spent 12 NHL seasons with the Rangers and Kings before becoming a respected agent and speaker. Bozek, who recorded a rookie franchise‑record 33 goals for the Kings, completed his career with an 11‑year NHL stint and later earned a master’s degree from Harvard Business School.

Rick Comley, who returned to NMU as athletic director after a distinguished coaching career, selected the three athletes for their historic significance and the lasting imprint they have left on the university’s hockey culture.
