North Dakota State University (NDSU) has accepted an invitation to become an affiliate member of the Mountain West Conference for football, a move that will see the Bison compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level beginning this fall.
The decision reflects a long‑term strategy aimed at bolstering the university’s national profile while supporting broader goals of academic reputation, research expansion and heightened engagement with alumni and supporters across the country.
NDSU will continue to participate in the Summit League for most of its other sports and will remain a member of the Big 12 Conference for wrestling, preserving a diversified conference footprint that underscores the school’s commitment to multisport excellence.
A New Chapter for Bison Football
University President David Cook said the affiliation aligns with the institution’s ambition to extend its impact and visibility, noting that the new football platform provides a powerful conduit for connecting with a wider audience.
Athletics Director Matt Larsen added that the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football will elevate the program’s trajectory and reinforce the university’s athletic legacy.
Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez welcomed the Bison, stating that their addition enriches the conference’s football landscape and reflects the growing appeal of the Mountain West brand.
