The Northeast Community College women’s soccer program is poised to chase a return to the regional championship after a season that ended with a 9‑9‑2 record and a narrow loss to Iowa Lakes Community College.
A Coaching Philosophy Revived
Coach Chad Miller has re‑embraced an old‑school, hands‑on style, believing that discipline and fundamentals can reshape the team’s identity. The Hawks opened the campaign with a 1‑6 slump before rallying to an 8‑2 finish that left Miller visibly pleased with the trajectory of his squad.
Depth Through Experience and Youth
The roster features a core of ten returning sophomores who will anchor the side, complemented by fifteen newcomers eager to make an impact. This blend of experience and fresh energy is intended to deepen the squad’s overall quality.
Key Personnel and Tactical Adjustments
Among the veterans, Demitra McClure, Maria Gomez Herrera and Emma Brilleman stand out; Brilleman finished second in MVP voting a year ago, while Gomez Herrera provides defensive stability. In goal, Esther Franklin and transfer Sabrina Ramsay are battling for the starting spot, adding depth to a position that has seen recent turnover. Offensively, the team plans to focus on its top scorers rather than spreading shots across the field.
Defensive Rebuilding and Goalkeeping Competition
Defensively, the team must replace several graduates, but the return of Gomez Herrera alongside holdovers such as Madelynn Curry, plus freshmen center backs Addison Rounds and Ella Johns‑Stewart, offers a promising mix. The new tactical system was tested in a preseason scrimmage against Hastings College, where midfielders Grace Bailey, Whitney Bogart and Kornelia Jedra, as well as Avianna Arroyo, showed improved cohesion.
Scrimmage Insights and Ranking Reflections
A recent scrimmage highlighted the promise of the new approach, yet Coach Miller remains skeptical of the preseason NJCAA Division II poll that placed the Hawks at No. 19. He recalls an earlier No. 9 ranking and questions the consistency of the team’s performance since entering the season.
Looking ahead, the Hawks aim to capitalize on their recent momentum, integrate the fresh talent, and ultimately reclaim the regional championship that has eluded them for the past two years despite having won four of six titles in the program’s recent history.
