The 2026 GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll has positioned Northern Michigan University’s men’s soccer team third among conference rivals, a placement that reflects both the program’s rapid ascent and the high expectations set by last season’s achievements.
Momentum From a Breakthrough Season
In 2025 the Wildcats captured the GLIAC Tournament Championship and secured their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016, finishing the year with a 9‑5‑6 overall record and a 6‑4‑2 mark in conference play.
Head coach Alex Fatovic, now in his fifth year at the helm, and assistant coach Chance Vang, who grew the program from two wins in 2023 to nine in 2025, will continue to steer the team’s development.
Record‑Setting Returners
Captains Luca Rosen and Asaf Kristal return as the backbone of the side; Rosen earned All‑Conference First Team and All‑Region First Team honors after contributing nine goals and four assists, while Kristal rewrote the program’s record books for minutes played, saves and other goalkeeping metrics.
A Global Recruiting Class
The 2026 roster welcomes 16 newcomers, nine freshmen and seven transfers, hailing from England, Spain, Wales, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada, adding depth and international experience to the squad.
The Wildcats opened their preseason with a 1‑1 draw against UW‑Green Bay and a 3‑0 victory over Schoolcraft College, and they will test themselves against non‑conference opponents such as Northwood, Tiffin and Saginaw Valley State before diving into a demanding GLIAC slate.
Looking Forward
With the goal of defending their tournament title and sharpening their competitive edge, the Wildcats hope the blend of seasoned leaders, record‑setting talent and a diverse recruiting class will carry them through a challenging schedule and back to the top of the conference.
