Ahmed Mohamed, a soccer coach based in Northern Virginia, now faces 26 felony counts that include embezzlement and computer fraud. Prosecutors say the alleged scheme netted nearly $60,000 from families who thought they were paying for a summer camp abroad.
A Scheme Built on False Promises
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Mohamed convinced at least 13 households to transfer money under the promise of a youth soccer program in Italy. The coach, who previously worked with the Alexandria Soccer Association, is accused of using that affiliation to gain trust before diverting the funds for personal use.
Investigators have identified the victims and estimate the total loss at just under $60,000. Police are urging anyone with additional information to contact the department’s Financial Crimes Unit as the case moves forward.
The Alexandria Soccer Association released a statement clarifying that Mohamed acted independently and was not authorized to solicit funds on its behalf. The organization said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Mohamed is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Fairfax County General District Court on September 2. The hearing will determine whether the case proceeds to trial.
