A Strategic Leap
Northmont High School, a longtime member of the Greater Western Ohio Conference, announced that it will compete in Division I football beginning with the 2026 season. The move places the school among eight institutions that have elected to advance to the higher tier, a shift that the Ohio High School Athletic Association formally confirmed.
Athletic director Micah Harding cited the program’s recent struggles and the desire for a fresh competitive environment as key factors behind the decision. Head coach Ben Rulli, in his second year at the helm, championed the proposal, arguing that the increased visibility and playoff pathways could revitalize the program. Enrollment figures of 561 students would have positioned Northmont as the ninth‑largest school in Division II the previous year, underscoring the school’s ambition to punch above its size.
The transition is not without obstacles. Northmont finished the 2025 campaign winless, extending a 17‑game losing streak that spans two seasons. Acknowledging the disparity in size and resources among Division I opponents, the administration has pledged to reassess the strategy annually, balancing competitive aspirations with realistic expectations.
If the plan unfolds as intended, the 2026 season will mark the first time since 2022 that all eight members of the Greater Western Ohio Conference compete in Division I football, potentially reshaping regional rivalries and broadcast opportunities. The coming months will reveal how the school navigates this ambitious leap.
