Northridge High School's varsity football squad is currently immersed in summer training, donning helmets but foregoing pads as they brace for the sweltering conditions that dominate Alabama afternoons.
Freshman Barker Terrell, who has already joined the roster, says the team has arranged abundant water stations and ice packs to keep every player cool and hydrated throughout each session.
Hydration Strategies on the Field
Trainer Elizabeth Storie oversees the health of more than 90 athletes, juggling gallons of water and electrolyte‑rich Gatorade to stave off dehydration and maintain peak performance.
Head coach Ryan Lolley views the oppressive heat not as a hindrance but as a chance to instill resilience, using the environment to simulate the physical challenges his players will face when the season arrives.
To mitigate exposure to the peak temperatures, the team's walkthrough and drill work are scheduled to conclude by 11 a.m., ensuring that practice ends before the day's highest heat index.
Looking ahead, the program will transition to full fall camp next week, at which point helmets and pads will be introduced, marking the next phase of preparation for the upcoming season.
For Terrell, the daily grind of early‑morning practices represents both a test of endurance and an exciting step toward earning a larger role on the team.
