Northwestern University has revealed a series of staff updates ahead of the 2026‑27 men's basketball season, positioning the program to blend seasoned leadership with fresh expertise. Head coach Chris Collins outlined the changes as a strategic effort to strengthen coaching, analytics and operational efficiency.
Staff Changes
Collins emphasized that the revamped staff will integrate on‑court instruction with sophisticated video analysis and logistical planning, ensuring the team can compete at a higher level in the Big Ten.
John Martinez, who previously served as a graduate manager and video/recruiting operations coordinator, has been promoted to assistant coach. In this role he will oversee on‑court coaching, recruiting, player development and international scouting, bringing a track record of contributing to teams that reached the NCAA Tournament’s second round and earned top‑three finishes in conference play.
Trevor Marcus joins the staff as assistant coach and director of video operations. He arrives from Duke, where he headed video coordination and managed advanced analytics for the Blue Devils, experience that should translate into deeper statistical insight for Northwestern.
Chris Lauten has been elevated to chief of staff, a position that will see him manage logistics, strategic planning and NIL coordination. Lauten’s background includes stints in the NBA’s League Office and a role as a student manager at Duke, where he contributed to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
Looking Forward
The new roster of assistants and support staff reflects a deliberate mix of returning experience and innovative talent. As the Wildcats prepare for the upcoming season, the added depth in coaching, analytics and administration aims to elevate the program’s competitiveness and broaden its strategic horizons.
