Notre Dame is intensifying its pursuit of Karnell “Greedy” James, a three‑star safety from Texas, for the 2027 recruiting class.
James, currently pledged to the Texas Longhorns, has publicly expressed interest in the Fighting Irish and is scheduled to take an official visit to campus in June.
A promising prospect amid a crowded board
Ranked as the No. 26 safety in the 2027 class by 247 Sports, James brings a blend of size and ball‑hawking skills. In his junior season he amassed 53 tackles, two interceptions, six pass breakups, recovered a fumble and returned two punts for touchdowns.
His expanding offer sheet reads like a who’s‑who of college football powerhouses, including Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon and a host of other top programs.
While James remains committed to Texas, the visit to South Bend could tip the scales, especially as Notre Dame looks to bolster a defense that has been a focal point of recent recruiting efforts.
The Irish coaching staff, led by head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive backs coach Mike Mickens, see James as a potential anchor for a secondary that aims to return to national prominence.
In a contingency move, the program is also hosting Miami safety Andre Hyppolite on a visit, using him as a backup option should James ultimately choose another school.
