Two Notre Dame standouts, offensive lineman Matty Augustine and cornerback Chaz Smith, have been forced to the sidelines after sustaining injuries during the recent fall camp. Augustine broke his right fifth metatarsal and required surgery, while Smith fractured his right wrist and also went under the knife.
A hopeful return
Medical officials say both procedures were successful and that the players are expected to make a full recovery before the start of the 2026 season.
The season will open on Sunday, September 6, when Notre Dame travels to Lambeau Field in Green Bay to meet Wisconsin.
Augustine, a 6‑foot‑7, 315‑pound second‑year player, was slated to compete for the starting right guard position, while Smith, a 6‑foot‑1 freshman weighing 180 pounds, was projected to see action on special teams.
