A Season of Transition
Brock Sheahan stepped into the head‑coach role after two decades of Jeff Jackson’s leadership, inheriting a program that had not seen a coaching change in twenty years. The 2024‑25 campaign ended with a 4‑19‑1 record in Big Ten play, a statistic that underscored the steep climb ahead.
Sheahan’s vision emphasized pace, entertainment and a process‑driven approach, but the early going proved brutal. The team dropped its first thirteen Big Ten games, marking one of the program’s worst stretches in recent memory.
Despite the rocky start, the second half of the 2025‑26 season flipped the script. Notre Dame rattled off three consecutive overtime victories, a first in school history, and finished the regular season with a surge that hinted at latent potential.
Key Returnees and New Faces
The roster that will carry the Fighting Irish into the 2026‑27 campaign retains several pivotal contributors. Danny Nelson, Paul Fischer and Evan Werner are set to return, with Werner boasting three straight 20‑point college seasons. Graduate center Sutter Muzzatti, who led the team in assists last year, may extend his eligibility, while sophomore net‑minder Nicholas Kempf started every game he was available.
Adding to the mix, eight newcomers will join the squad, including four freshmen and four transfers. The incoming class features talent from the Ontario Hockey League, the United States National Team Development Program and other competitive circuits, promising depth and fresh energy.
