The Nunavut Ukpiit Hockey Association, formerly the Nunavut Fury Hockey Association, has reemerged with a clear purpose: to grow girls' and women's hockey across Northern Canada. The relaunch, announced in early 2025, reflects a commitment to Inuit women's representation and the trailblazing spirit of the sport.
A New Identity, A Shared Vision
The association's inaugural U‑19 tournament took place in Rankin Inlet, on the western shore of Hudson Bay, marking the first competitive step in its new era.
The name Ukpiit, meaning snowy owls, was chosen to symbolize sharp vision, fierce defense and soaring potential, qualities the association hopes to instill in every player.
Programs are designed to support success both on and off the ice, offering on‑ice training, competitions and mentorship that weave Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit societal values into every decision.
Max Joy, the Director of Programming and Initiatives and founder of the original Fury, stresses that Ukpiit provides a vital pathway for girls to pursue hockey dreams while staying rooted in community values.

Looking ahead, the association plans a series of camps, travel teams and leadership‑development initiatives that will nurture skill, confidence and future leaders.
