A New Calendar for the NWSL
The National Women’s Soccer League has unveiled a sweeping revision to its 2027 schedule, opting to launch the season in February rather than the traditional spring window. This shift places the opening match on February 11 in Los Angeles, just three days before the Super Bowl reaches its climax in the same city.
By front‑loading the season, the league hopes to capture the heightened sports attention that surrounds the NFL’s championship game, while also creating a clearer pathway for its players to compete on the global stage.
The revised calendar also introduces a mid‑season hiatus from June 24 through July 25, a period earmarked for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This break will allow national teams to assemble for the tournament and give NWSL athletes the opportunity to represent their countries without club obligations.
The league’s championship game is slated for November 20, positioning it at the tail end of the calendar year and aligning the competition with the rhythms of European leagues that conclude in the autumn.
This realignment reflects a broader trend across North American soccer. Major League Soccer has announced that it too will transition to a summer‑to‑spring format beginning in 2027, a move that promises tighter synchronization between club and international fixtures.
