NYC Launches Free Overnight Soccer Leagues Across All Five Boroughs

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYC Open Play brings community soccer to every neighborhood through July 18

A Citywide Soccer Nightlife

New York City’s streets and parks will soon echo with the sound of evening kicks as Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveils NYC Open Play, a free overnight soccer initiative that runs through July 18. The program transforms public fields in all five boroughs into nighttime arenas where adults 18 and older can join pickup games without cost.

The effort is a joint venture between New York City FC, NYC Footy, NYC Parks, and the Hudson River Park Trust. Each organization brings its own expertise, from the club’s nonprofit foundation to the park’s stewardship, creating a collaborative model that blends recreation with community building.

Where the Games Happen

Designated fields in Manhattan’s Chelsea Waterside, Queens’ Astoria Park, Brooklyn’s Calvert Vaux Park, the Bronx’s Soundview Park, and Staten Island’s Fairview Park will host up to three 7‑on‑7 pitches equipped with goals, cones and soccer balls. Games can start as early as 10:30 p.m. and stretch until 8 a.m., allowing night‑owls and early risers alike to participate.

Staff from NYC Footy will be on site throughout the night to organize teams, match players of varying skill levels, and foster an inclusive atmosphere. Their presence aims to keep the games welcoming for newcomers while maintaining a competitive spirit for seasoned players.

Special Events and Safety Measures

New York City FC will host weekend programming at one of the fields, featuring free clinics, community soccer events, and giveaways through its City in the Community initiative. Security personnel and Parks Enforcement Patrol officers will be stationed at each location to ensure a safe environment during the overnight hours.

Players may register individually or join a team through the NYC Open Play website, and participation will continue even in light rain, pausing only for severe weather. The initiative not only provides a unique recreational outlet but also celebrates the city’s growing soccer culture ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
