A New Playground for the City
New York City Public Schools has joined forces with the nonprofit Street Soccer USA to refurbish and construct new soccer fields across the city, turning underused spaces into vibrant community hubs.
The partnership encompasses more than two dozen schools, delivering a schedule of programs that runs six days a week. From after‑school clinics to weekend leagues, the fields become venues for sport, mentorship and civic engagement.
Luis Torres, principal at CS 55, describes the project as life‑changing, noting that the fields provide a safe environment where children can play, connect and grow.
Rohan Allen, program manager for Street Soccer USA, adds that team sports do more than improve fitness; they build confidence, teach cooperation and empower youth to envision brighter futures.
Beyond the classrooms, the renovated fields serve as gathering points for families, coaches and local organizations, reinforcing neighborhood ties and promoting health across the boroughs.
Empowering Youth Through Soccer
Street Soccer USA, a nonprofit dedicated to changing the world through soccer, sees the new fields as a catalyst for broader social impact. By integrating educational components and community outreach, the program aims to break cycles of disadvantage and foster resilience.
City officials hope the model can be replicated in other neighborhoods, creating a network of safe, accessible play spaces that reflect the city’s commitment to youth development and community‑well being.
