Groundbreaking Marks New Era for Youth Hockey
The Oahe Hockey Association held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ice Barn Renovation Project, marking the final phase of its Capitalize on the Future Campaign.
The initiative seeks to upgrade ice facilities across central South Dakota, enhancing amenities such as seating, fire suppression systems, locker rooms, concessions and parking to create a multi‑use venue for hockey, figure skating, recreational skating, tournaments and community events.
To date, the campaign has secured $3.1 million of its $3.7 million target, with project leaders estimating the renovated barn could generate roughly $450,000 each year in visitor spending for the region.
Community Leaders Appeal for Support
Executives from the association, including Nick Marso and Bret Afdahl, emphasized the facility’s role as a regional asset that serves thousands of youth and families, and they called on additional donors to bridge the remaining funding gap.
The renovation is expected to boost local tourism and provide a modern hub for sports and community gatherings, reinforcing the area’s reputation as a hub for youth athletics.
