A recent fundraising gala hosted by the Oahe Hockey Association gathered more than 170 community members in Pierre, South Dakota, to pledge support for a major renovation of the Ice Barn, the region’s central hub for youth hockey.
The evening, themed “Capitalize on the Future,” surpassed its goal, raising over $318,000 through a creative donation game where guests contributed by selecting numbered brochures, turning each contribution into a tangible pledge.
Speakers at the event underscored the emotional weight of the project, highlighting how the Ice Barn serves not only as a rink but as a gathering place that fosters friendships, discipline and lifelong memories for thousands of young athletes.
A hometown hero returns
Carter Sanderson, a Pierre native who has risen to the National Hockey League draft ranks, took the stage to share his personal journey, recalling countless hours skating under the barn’s lights and expressing a heartfelt desire to preserve that legacy for the next generation.
Three‑time Stanley Cup champion Brian Rafalski, who visited Pierre during the COVID‑19 pandemic in 2020, returned to the same venue to lend his voice, describing the facility as a cornerstone of regional sports culture and urging continued investment in its future.
Nick Marso, the campaign manager orchestrating the effort, reflected on the night’s energy, noting that the funds will finance phase three of the renovation, which includes expanding the rink’s footprint, upgrading lighting and improving parking logistics to accommodate the projected 2,000 youth participants and 100 games held annually within a 300‑mile radius.
The revitalized Ice Barn is slated to become a year‑round, game‑ready facility, ensuring that youth hockey and other community activities can thrive for generations to come, while also reinforcing Pierre’s reputation as a vibrant center for sport and camaraderie.
