Oakland has opened the Park Play Lending Library inside the Larry E. Reid Sports Center, a new hub that provides free sports equipment to children in the Brookfield Village neighborhood.
The library is stocked with footballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, jump ropes, yoga mats and tennis gear, while community feedback added card games like UNO and dominoes to the mix.
Maribel Lopez, the OPRYD recreation supervisor who spearheaded the effort, said she noticed a clear gap in resources for families who cannot afford to purchase gear for their kids.
Lopez emphasized that the library serves a high‑need area of Oakland according to the city’s equity index, and she believes the initiative can help shift the balance toward greater social mobility.
Riles Nganga, an OPRYD recreation leader, added that the variety of equipment creates a safe, engaging environment that encourages children to stay active and try new sports.
Maria Garcia, a lifelong Oakland resident, pointed out that many families in the area face financial constraints that keep their children out of organized sports, making the library a vital lifeline.
A 2022 Aspen Institute report found that only 14 percent of Oakland youth meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity, and the cost of youth sports has risen 46 percent since 2019, with families spending roughly $1,016 annually on a single sport.
The project’s organizers hope to expand the model to other districts, tailoring equipment inventories to community suggestions and gradually increasing the range of offerings.
The Larry E. Reid Sports Center also made history by installing the neighborhood’s first public swimming pool since 1976, underscoring the center’s role as a catalyst for community revitalization.
City officials say the pilot is designed to get off the ground as smoothly as possible, with plans to evaluate impact and refine the program before a broader rollout.
