Exploring Immediate Alternatives
In the short term, Roots SC is evaluating a pop‑up venue within the Coliseum’s parking lot and is also considering repurposing its training facility in Alameda as a matchday site, aiming to maintain a presence in the Bay Area while a permanent solution is secured.
The club’s recent match at the Coliseum set a United Soccer League attendance record in March 2025, drawing 26,000 supporters, underscoring the strong local appetite for professional soccer.
Ownership Uncertainty and Legal Hurdles
The long‑term ownership of the Coliseum remains unsettled, with the Oakland Athletics retaining a 50 % stake while the city of Oakland holds the other half. A pending sale of the municipal portion to the Oakland Acquisition Company has hit a legal snag, as a lawsuit from Communities for a Better Environment alleges violations of the state Surplus Lands Act.
The term sheet governing the transaction requires the Oakland Acquisition Company to secure dismissal of the lawsuit before the June 30 closing date, adding pressure to finalize the deal.
