A Camp With Purpose
Ochai Agbaji, the NBA guard who grew up in the heart of Kansas City, returned this summer for the second consecutive year to lead a youth basketball camp that blends skill work with community mentorship.
Over two days, dozens of kids gathered at a local gym where Agbaji and a team of coaches ran drills focused on jump shots, ball handling and footwork, while also sprinkling in games and one‑on‑one sessions that let the youngsters apply what they learned in real time.
More Than Just Basketball
Beyond the court, Agbaji stressed the importance of giving back to the neighborhood that helped shape his own path, noting that the camp is as much about building confidence and camaraderie as it is about improving a player's form.
The curriculum includes brief talks on teamwork, perseverance and academic responsibility, aiming to leave participants with lessons that extend far beyond the hardwood.
For the kids, the experience offers a rare chance to learn from a professional athlete who remembers the same streets and after‑school programs that now host them, fostering a sense of belonging and aspiration.
Agbaji hopes that each camper walks away with a sharper skill set and a new role model, carrying forward the belief that dedication on the court can translate into positive change off it.
