A community swing for a new court
On a sunny Saturday at Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, the Odessa YMCA gathered families, friends and local supporters for its annual ‘Families for Fairways’ fundraiser. The event, now in its several‑year run, uses the sport of golf as a vehicle to generate dollars for a cause that hits close to home: a basketball court that has served generations but is showing the strain of half a century of play.
The current facility, installed more than 50 years ago, endures heavy use by children and adults alike, yet its surface is cracked and its hoops are patched together with makeshift repairs. Organizers say the wear is more than cosmetic; it poses safety concerns for the youngsters who rely on the court for recreation and skill development.
Chrissy Medina, chief executive of the Odessa YMCA, addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the upcoming renovation will transform the space into a safer, more modern venue. "Our goal is to give kids a place where they can play without worrying about broken boards or rusted rims," she said, underscoring the broader impact on community health.
Isiah Deary, a longtime participant in the YMCA’s youth programs, spoke about the event’s ripple effect. He noted that the fundraiser not only raises money but also creates a sense of belonging, offering kids structured activities and a constructive outlet for energy that might otherwise find its way into trouble.
Looking ahead to August
With the raised funds earmarked for a complete court rebuild, the YMCA anticipates construction to wrap up by August. The new surface will meet current safety standards and feature updated equipment, ensuring that the court can continue to serve as a cornerstone of local youth programming for years to come.
