A New Era for the Monarchs
Old Dominion University enters the 2025 football season with a starkly different offensive outlook. After losing the bulk of last year’s lineup, the team will rely on a single returning starter, running back Devin Roche, to anchor the attack.
The departure of offensive coordinator Kevin Decker to Memphis prompted a rapid internal promotion: Kody Cook now oversees the unit as offensive coordinator, while veteran assistants Michael Smith and Ryan Wilson have been added to coach receivers and tight ends respectively.
Quarterback duties will be contested among three candidates — Quinn Henicle, Jaxon Potter and Ryan Huff. Henicle brings a proven track record, highlighted by a 92‑yard touchdown run earlier this year that underscored his playmaking ability.
Adding to the excitement, the Monarchs have secured several high‑profile recruits. Brooklyn Nace, a three‑star prospect from Pennsylvania ranked No. 65 nationally, arrives with All‑District honors and a career that includes 5,127 passing yards and 65 touchdowns. Joining him are BJ Bedgood, a top‑ranked Alabama recruit, and Virginia’s own CJ Jackson III, who sits at No. 49 in his state.
The receiving corps also benefits from experience. Sidney Mbanasor returns alongside Kendall Harris, a player who has appeared in every game for Mercer since 2024, bringing reliability and depth to the position.
Perhaps the most encouraging development is the continuity along the offensive line. Six linemen who saw action last season return, among them Logan Cox, who stepped in at left tackle during the Cure Bowl and is expected to provide stability in the trenches.
Defensively, the line will miss its starters but still fields six capable players, including Brayden Walker, who will help preserve the unit’s cohesion as the team prepares for its season opener.
