The 2026 girls soccer season opened with a stark contrast for two of Utah’s most recent state champions. Ogden High, the 3A powerhouse that captured its fourth championship in six years last spring, stumbled to a 3‑3 record after six matches, while Syracuse, the newly crowned 6A champion, opened 4‑2 but not without its own hurdles.
Coaches Alexis King and Jason Steiner, each in their third year leading their respective programs, have emphasized continuity but also acknowledged the challenges of integrating new talent and adjusting schemes after graduation.
Ogden’s roster retains core pieces from the 17‑2 championship side, including goalkeeper Erin Bott and forward Taylee Hughes, who previously starred for Syracuse before moving to Ogden. Their chemistry, however, has been hampered by a porous defense that has yielded a 4‑0 loss to Green Canyon and a 5‑1 defeat at Farmington.
Defensive Adjustments and Goalkeeping Evolution
Head coach Whitney Cella, a junior goalkeeper for Syracuse, has yet to record a shutout this season, but her recent performances have limited opponents to fewer than two goals per game. Meanwhile, sophomore keeper Whitney Fife has seen her save average climb from 5.6 to 7.5 per game, reflecting the increased pressure on the back line.
Offensively, Elle Weston, who netted 42 goals in 2025, has managed only two this year, while Jocee Eddy has emerged as a bright spot for Syracuse, scoring ten goals in the first five games, including six in two victories.
The early‑season results also ripple into tournament seeding. With the state tournament bracket determined by the RPI, each loss can shift a team’s regional placement, adding urgency for both programs to tighten defense and sharpen attack before region play begins.
Looking Ahead
The path forward will hinge on tightening defensive organization and capitalizing on the scoring bursts already evident from players like Jocee Eddy and Taylee Hughes. If Ogden and Syracuse can stabilize their back ends, the early setbacks may prove to be merely a prelude to a deeper run in the postseason.
