The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced last week that girls flag football will become its 29th officially sanctioned sport, with competition set to begin in the 2026‑27 school year. The decision followed a unanimous vote by the OHSAA Board of Directors and marks a milestone in the state’s effort to broaden athletic opportunities for female students.
A New Chapter for Girls' Athletics
The sport’s growth has been meteoric. Currently, 162 high school teams across Ohio field girls flag football, and 23 state associations nationwide now sanction the discipline. The momentum helped secure a spot for flag football in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, underscoring its rising profile on the national stage.
Key supporters include the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. These organizations have partnered with the OHSAA to stage a statewide tournament, provide coaching resources and promote the sport at community events, signaling a strong commitment to its long‑term development.
The origins of girls flag football in Ohio date back to 2021, when the first organized division emerged in Northeast Ohio. Three years later, participation has surged from just twenty schools to more than one hundred sixty programs, reflecting both student interest and robust backing from school districts.
OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute emphasized the cultural significance of the move, noting that the sport offers a competitive outlet that aligns with the growing enthusiasm for flag football among young women and mirrors the pathway to the upcoming Olympic Games.
Local leaders such as Elizabeth Blackburn, Dee Haslam and Jimmy Haslam have also voiced their endorsement, highlighting the program’s role in fostering leadership, teamwork and athletic development for high school students across the state.
Beyond the field, the expansion reflects a broader commitment to gender equity in school sports. State officials say the trend will continue to gain traction as more communities invest in inclusive athletic opportunities that empower female athletes.
