Ohio has long been celebrated for its passionate high school football culture, and the 2026 season promises another year of fierce competition among some of the nation’s top programs.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has released a precise timeline that starts with a heat‑acclimatization period on July 15, a phase designed to gradually expose players to warmer conditions while limiting risk.
Heat Acclimatization Period
During this initial window each school may schedule up to five voluntary contact days, allowing coaches to assess fitness and safety without the full gear.
From May 13 to July 13 coaches can hold 13 non‑padded summer practices, a period that is officially voluntary for athletes but crucial for building chemistry and evaluating talent.
Padded Practices and Scrimmages
The first official practice in pads is slated for August 1, marking the transition from light drills to full‑contact work. In the following week, teams are permitted to stage two organized scrimmages between August 8 and August 16, giving players a taste of game‑like intensity.
The regular season will launch on Friday, August 21, kicking off a 10‑week schedule that will see teams battle across the state before the playoffs begin.
With these structured milestones, players, coaches and fans alike can anticipate a well‑orchestrated campaign that balances safety, development and competition.
