Ohio State’s men’s basketball program is turning its attention to the 2026‑27 season, with head coach Jake Diebler framing the upcoming campaign around a renewed defensive identity.
A Defensive Bootcamp in Practice
Diebler described the recent practice as a ‘defensive bootcamp,’ demanding that players stay engaged off the ball, communicate constantly and close out on shooters with relentless intensity.
The coaching staff has also placed a premium on transition defense, insisting that the Buckeyes shut down fast‑break opportunities before they materialize.
Adding size has been a noticeable shift from previous years, and junior center Andrija Jelavić believes his blend of speed, playmaking and perimeter shooting can stretch the floor in ways the roster has not previously offered.
Head coach Diebler has been pushing the new arrivals, including transfer Justin Pippen, to embrace both their offensive freedom and defensive responsibilities.
Puerto Rico Test
The Buckeyes will test the new approach in two exhibition games scheduled for Aug. 2 and 3 in Puerto Rico, giving Diebler his first real‑time evaluation of the squad’s progress.
Veteran John Mobley Jr. continues to serve as the team’s vocal leader, guiding younger players through the rigors of the new system, while Justin Pippen views Diebler as a mentor off the court but acknowledges the coach’s demanding style.
If the early signs are any indication, the combination of heightened defensive focus, added size and versatile talent could position Ohio State as a formidable contender in the upcoming season.
