Roster Evolution Driven by the Transfer Portal
The Buckeyes enter the 2026‑27 campaign with a markedly different roster, a direct result of the NCAA’s transfer portal and the growing influence of name, image and likeness deals. Coach Jake Diebler has overhauled the squad multiple times, most recently after program‑leading scorer Bruce Thornton announced his departure for the NBA draft.
Projected Starting Five
At point guard, Justin Pippen, son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, arrives from Cal to claim the starting role, bringing a blend of playmaking skill and pedigree that could anchor the offense. On the wing, John Mobley Jr. is slated to start at shooting guard, expected to shoulder a primary scoring load while providing perimeter defense.
Anthony Thompson, a five‑star recruit, will line up at small forward, offering immediate scoring punch and versatility on the wing. Amare Bynum earns the power‑forward slot thanks to his explosive athleticism and a breakout performance that left fans eager for more.
If healthy, Josh Ojianwuna is projected to start at center, bringing size, rebounding and a willingness to score inside. The combination of experience and fresh talent creates a balanced front five that aims to compete in the Big Ten.
Bench Depth and Flexibility
The bench includes Myles Herro and Braylen Nash, players who may see limited minutes but could be called upon in injury situations or strategic rotations. Their presence adds depth and allows the coaching staff to experiment with different lineups throughout the season.
