Ohio State announced that its annual senior day celebration will be held on September 5, the opening day of the 2026 season, when the Buckeyes travel to face Ball State. The move shifts the traditional ceremony, which usually takes place before the final home game against Michigan in late November, to the early‑season matchup.
A historic honor amid the schedule change
The ceremony will include the induction of former coach Jim Tressel into the Ohio Stadium Ring of Honor, adding a layer of legacy to the new schedule and drawing attention from alumni and fans alike.
This is not the first adjustment to the senior day calendar; last year, coach Ryan Day relocated band rehearsals away from rivalry week and arranged for players to fly to Ann Arbor for the Michigan game while the team endured a losing streak.
The scheduling shift follows a broader conversation about the Ohio State–Michigan rivalry, sparked in part by Michigan’s coach Kyle Whittingham, who suggested that a rivalry can be fierce without hatred.
Bryce Underwood, a sophomore for the Wolverines, echoed that sentiment, describing the upcoming clash as ‘just another game,’ a perspective that contrasts with the Buckeyes’ long‑standing emotional intensity.
Both programs enter the season with high expectations, as the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll lists Ohio State at No. 1 and Michigan at No. 16, underscoring the continued prominence of the rivalry.
Among the seniors on Ohio State’s roster, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is expected to declare for the NFL Draft after the season, adding another layer of anticipation to the Buckeyes’ campaign.
