A tradition reborn on the gridiron
Ohio State announced that the iconic Buckeye Stripe, once reserved for playoff contests, will become a permanent element of its core football uniforms beginning with the 2026 season. The stripe will appear on both home and away jerseys, each receiving a distinct color palette that reflects the program’s visual identity.
Home uniforms will showcase silver and white striping, while the away versions will feature silver paired with scarlet. The design choice ties the modern look to the visual language that has accompanied the Buckeyes during periods of historic success.
A legacy that spans generations
The stripe’s lineage stretches back to the 1940s, when it first adorned teams that captured four national titles — 1954, 1968, 1970 and 2002. Those championship squads wore the motif during eras that defined Ohio State’s football legacy.
The most recent appearance came in the 2025 national championship game against Notre Dame, marking the first time the stripe had been seen on the field since the 2022 College Football Playoff Peach Bowl semifinal loss to Georgia. Equipment director Kevin Ries explained that reintroducing the stripe in playoff settings honors the teams that previously wore it.
Ries noted that the visual cue serves as a tribute to the program’s storied past, linking current players with the achievements of earlier generations. By extending the stripe to all regular‑season games, the university aims to embed that heritage into every snap of the 2026 campaign.
