Defensive Standouts Highlight OVC Preview
The Ohio Valley Conference recently announced its list of Defensive Players to Watch for the upcoming 2026 football season, a preseason acknowledgment that underscores the league's deep talent pool. Among the honorees are three standout defenders from the Lindenwood Lions, each of whom has demonstrated impressive performance metrics and leadership on the field.
Andrew Zook, a senior anchor on the defensive line, recorded 19 tackles last season, including a season‑high five against Tennessee Tech. His consistency in the trenches and ability to disrupt opposing offenses have positioned him as a cornerstone of the Lions' defense.
Jacob Waller, who earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after a 17‑tackle performance in a victory over Charleston Southern, finished the year with 89 stops, ranking seventh across the conference. Waller's knack for penetrating the backfield is reflected in his 8.5 tackles for loss, a statistic that highlights his disruptive presence.
Freshman Carter Johnson made an immediate impact, logging 14 tackles over 11 games and securing an interception that helped seal a win. His recognition as the conference Freshman of the Week underscores the excitement surrounding his potential and the depth of talent arriving at Lindenwood.
Special teams contributor Christopher Bennett Jr. was also celebrated, averaging 22.9 yards per kick return and earning Freshman of the Week after a standout showing at Tennessee State. His dynamic return ability adds an extra dimension to the Lions' special‑teams unit.
