Ohio’s First Sanctioned Girls Flag Football State Championships

A pioneering event meets early resistance from local schools

Ohio is gearing up to host its first-ever sanctioned girls flag football state championship, a milestone that aligns with the sport’s upcoming debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The tournament promises to showcase a rapidly growing alternative to traditional tackle football, drawing attention from statewide media and fans eager to see the new format in action.

Yet the inaugural event will feature only a handful of participating schools. Athletic directors across the region cite a lack of student interest, competition with established spring sports such as softball and track, and practical hurdles including tight budgets, limited field availability and transportation logistics as primary barriers to fielding teams.

Early Obstacles

Brad Hannahs, athletic director at Barnesville, says the school has seen no student or community interest in forming a squad. Jeff Wheeler of Cambridge echoes the sentiment, describing a “numbers game” that makes it difficult for smaller districts to justify the investment required for a new program. Michael Dunlap from John Glenn adds that configuring suitable fields and arranging reliable transportation further complicate any immediate rollout.

Despite the challenges, the sport enjoys financial backing from two NFL franchises. The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals have pledged support to help fund the state tournament, signaling corporate confidence in the discipline’s long‑term viability.

For now, spectators will need to travel to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton to watch the championship unfold. The venue, named after the late Browns owner, will serve as the epicenter of Ohio’s experimental push toward gender‑inclusive football, a step that many believe could eventually overcome the current participation roadblocks.
