A coalition of investors has brought three star athletes into the ownership circle of Oklahoma City’s upcoming professional soccer franchise.
The group, which includes former NFL quarterback Baker Mayfield, NBA guard Jalen Williams and Olympic track star Sydney McLaughlin‑Levrone, said the investment reflects a personal connection to the city that helped shape their careers.
Stadium construction moves forward
Groundbreaking took place in June 2026 on the MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium, a 10,000‑seat venue designed to host soccer matches, concerts and other large‑scale events. The facility will serve as the centerpiece of a downtown redevelopment project that blends sports, entertainment and education.
Club officials have said the franchise will begin play in the USL Championship in 2028, entering a league that sits just below the top tier of American soccer. The stadium’s design also accommodates a future United Football League franchise, expanding the city’s football footprint.
Beyond the sport, the investors emphasized community engagement, with Mayfield noting that the venture allows him to give back to a state that played a pivotal role in his own journey, while Williams highlighted the opportunity to contribute to Oklahoma City beyond the basketball arena.
Details on the team’s name, colors and branding are slated for release later this year, adding another layer of anticipation for fans eager to see the city’s new soccer identity take shape.
