A Coach’s Stand Against Violence
On August 16, a hallway encounter at a Shawnee, Oklahoma hotel turned tense when a guest, later identified as Christopher Stevens, produced a knife and threatened a teenage player on the local baseball team.
Coach Kevin Lomon, who was traveling with his 13‑player squad, stepped forward, delivering a series of punches that forced Stevens to the floor and kept him pinned until law enforcement arrived.
Two knives were recovered from the scene, but Stevens was taken into custody without injury, and none of the players were harmed.
Joey McCutcheon, Lomon’s attorney, later described the coach’s actions as a willingness to “put his life on the line” for his athletes, emphasizing the lasting impact of that decision.
Lomon himself has said he does not view himself as a hero, but added that he would make the same choice again, underscoring his commitment to the team’s safety.
The incident has sparked a legal dispute over whether the hotel failed in its duty to protect guests, a claim the hotel has so far declined to address publicly.
