Oklahoma’s football program is entering a pivotal phase as it reshapes the tight end position ahead of the 2026 season, a move coach Brent Venables hopes will restore the Sooners to the College Football Playoff.
The overhaul comes after a disappointing year that saw key departures at the spot, including Jaren Kanak, Kaden Helms, Will Huggins and Carson Kent, who have moved on to the NFL or other programs.
Returning talent such as John Locke Jr., Kade McIntyre and Trynae Washington will look to provide continuity, while new faces — transfers Hayden Hansen, Rocky Beers, Jack Van Dorselaer and freshmen Tyler Ruxer and Ryder Mix — are expected to inject fresh energy.
A New Coaching Direction
Adding to the intrigue, the staff welcomed Jason Witten, the Hall‑of‑Fame‑bound tight end turned broadcaster, to lead the group. Venables believes Witten’s professional pedigree will accelerate the development of the unit.
Kanak, who transitioned from linebacker to tight end last season, posted 44 receptions for 533 yards, illustrating the potential impact of the new scheme.
Fall camp begins next week, marking Year 5 under Venables and setting the stage for a competitive battle for playing time. The coaching staff is optimistic that the blend of experience and fresh talent will yield immediate dividends.
