A Season of Transition
The Ole Miss baseball squad saw its campaign close with a 12‑8 defeat to Troy in the College World Series, a result that marked the end of a two‑year stretch that included back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances.
Coach Mike Bianco took the opportunity to single out Hunter Elliott, Judd Utermark and Will Furniss, thanking them for the stability they brought after years of struggle and for helping the program climb back into the national conversation.
Elliott, the ace who started most Friday games in 2026 and was the sole remaining piece from the 2022 national championship roster, now faces a decision: he can remain for a sixth season but would have to pass on the upcoming MLB draft.
Utermark and Furniss both concluded their college eligibility in that final game; Utermark, who leads the Rebels with 44 home runs over the past two seasons, and Furniss, a consistent .300 hitter, leave behind a legacy of resilience.
Bianco noted that the seniors “hung together” and returned for their final year to steer the team back to Omaha, a moment he described as the culmination of a program revival that began after missed tournaments in 2023 and 2024.
The departing players also expressed personal reflections, with Elliott describing his emotions as gratitude for having helped “right the ship” and get the program back on track, while Furniss spoke of a special bond with his 2026 teammates.
Looking Ahead
As the roster reshapes, the Rebels will lean on the foundation laid by this senior class while integrating new talent, hoping to sustain the momentum generated over the past two seasons.
