At the recent SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida, Ole Miss football coach Pete Golding faced a wave of questions about alleged tampering involving a transfer linebacker, Luke Ferrelli, and used the opportunity to critique the broader transfer portal system.
The Transfer Portal Under Scrutiny
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney publicly accused Ole Miss of improper recruiting tactics, claiming Golding had sent Ferrelli a contract image that influenced his decision to commit to the Rebels instead of staying with the Tigers.
Golding responded by stating that the current portal environment incentivizes programs to poach players from rival teams, and he urged prospective athletes to engage in preliminary discussions before formally entering the portal.
He emphasized that his compliance department has fully cooperated with the NCAA’s ongoing investigation, turning over all relevant documentation and asserting that the university has adhered to every compliance protocol.
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter confirmed that the NCAA probe remains active, noting that any potential sanctions, such as probation or fines, are being addressed through the proper channels.
Despite the controversy, Golding reiterated that his primary responsibility is to recruit talented players and develop them on the field, a mission he said remains unchanged.
