Ole Miss Rebels Fortify Run Defense Ahead of 2026 Season

Transfer Jonathan Maldonado and freshman Landon Barnes join a unit eager to climb from ninth in the SEC

A Strategic Overhaul for the Defensive Line

Ole Miss entered the 2025 season ranked ninth in the SEC for run defense, a position that left the coaching staff aware of the need for improvement.

In their bowl game, the Miami Hurricanes rushed for 191 yards against the Rebels, highlighting the gaps that the defense must close.

To address those issues, the program announced the addition of two defensive linemen: a transfer from Nevada and a highly touted freshman from Texas.

Jonathan Maldonado, a 6‑foot‑6, 250‑pound transfer, arrives after a standout season at Nevada where he recorded five sacks, nine tackles for loss and 38 total tackles. He chose Ole Miss within two days of the transfer portal opening and will replace Princewill Umanmielen, who transferred to LSU after finishing third in the SEC in sacks last year.

Maldonado will be guided by veteran lineman Will Echoles, who is helping him adapt to the speed and physicality of SEC play.

Joining Maldonado is Landon Barnes, a 6‑foot‑3, 250‑pound defensive end from Duncanville High School in Texas. Barnes was a four‑star recruit who posted nine sacks and 21 tackles for loss in his senior season.

The Rebels plan to run a 4‑2‑5 defensive scheme that emphasizes a strong front four to stop the run and generate pressure on the quarterback. With these additions, the defense hopes to improve on the 149 yards allowed on the ground by opponents in 2025 and to better compete in the SEC.
