A Season of Transition
The University of Mississippi is gearing up for its season opener against Louisville at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, a matchup that will test the Rebels’ ability to adapt after a massive overhaul of their receiving corps.
Last season the Rebels lost four of their top five wide receivers, including Harrison Wallace II, De’Zhaun Stribling and Dae’Quan Wright, who all signed NFL contracts, while Cayden Lee transferred to Missouri. The only returning starter, Deuce Alexander, contributed 684 yards and two touchdowns last year after arriving from Wake Forest.
Collectively, the departed receivers accounted for more than 3,000 yards of production, leaving a void that the coaching staff must fill with a rotating committee approach.
New Faces on the Field
Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy have emerged as the new one‑two punch, offering a blend of speed and size that could stabilize the offense early in the campaign.
Adding to the mix are transfer portal acquisitions Johntay Cook II, Horatio Fields and Darrell Gill Jr., who must quickly learn Lane Kiffin’s playbook and adjust to John David‑Baker’s newly assumed role as offensive coordinator.
The departure of Charlie Weiss Jr. from the staff has placed the offensive coordination responsibilities on Baker, who now faces the challenge of integrating fresh talent while preserving the Rebels’ high‑tempo style.
Despite the upheaval, the Rebels remain optimistic that the blend of returning experience and new blood will keep the passing attack competitive as they open the season against the Cardinals.
