Olentangy’s Baseball Surge
The upcoming Division I district tournament will feature four baseball teams from Olentangy Local Schools, each earning a top seed that reflects the district’s rising prominence in Ohio high school sports.
Coaches across the program point to the district’s expanding enrollment, a strong youth baseball pipeline and a culture of community involvement as the backbone of their success. Coach Mike Weaver, Ty Brenning, Ryan Lucas and Tom Marker have all highlighted the role of parent‑run youth programs and the support of families in building that competitive edge.
With an enrollment of 23,873 students making Olentangy the fourth‑largest district in Ohio, the schools are planning an 18th elementary school for 2027 and a fifth high school that will serve nearly 9,000 high schoolers by 2035‑36, a growth that fuels deeper talent pools.
Recent history shows the teams’ consistency: Liberty captured the 2018 state championship, while Olentangy won the title last season, and all four squads have reached the OHSAA Division I state tournament in recent years.
In the final USA Today Co. Ohio Super 25 poll, Liberty sits at No. 1, Orange at No. 4 and Berlin at No. 10, and the postseason bracket places Liberty first, Orange second, Berlin third and Olentangy fifth, beginning May 26.
Sophomore Colby Luling of Orange is batting .493 and expresses confidence in his team’s performance, while the community eagerly anticipates a possible fourth meeting between Berlin and Olentangy in the state final scheduled for June 12 in Akron.
