A historic transition
Olivia Pichardo has etched her name into college baseball history, becoming the first woman to appear in a Division I baseball game as a pinch‑hitter in 2023 and later the first to pitch in a Division I contest in April 2026. Over five seasons at Brown University, she logged a perfect 0.00 ERA across six appearances, a testament to her dominance on the mound.
Born in Queens, New York, Pichardo spent four years with the U.S. Women’s National Baseball team before enrolling at Brown. Though she has never played organized softball, her elite baseball skill set and competitive experience made her an attractive prospect for Cal’s softball program.
Cal’s next chapter
The University of California, commonly referred to as Cal, announced that Pichardo will join its softball squad for the 2027 season. The move comes as the school’s renovated softball field nears completion, promising a modern venue for the team’s home games in Sacramento and Saratoga, California.
Cal’s athletic department highlighted the broader context of the program’s recent performance, noting a 15‑37 record in the previous season and a schedule that included home games in both Sacramento and Saratoga. The addition of Pichardo is expected to bring a new dimension to the roster as the team looks to improve on that record.
Steve Singleton, a senior administrator in Cal’s sports operations, praised the signing, stating that Pichardo’s “unique blend of poise, precision and competitive fire” aligns perfectly with the program’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
