Ona Riopedre, a 6‑foot‑2 guard from Barcelona, Spain, is set to join the Illinois Fighting Illini women's basketball program for the 2026‑27 season, adding international experience and a proven scoring pedigree to the roster.
Her freshman campaign was a breakout, as she averaged 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game, quickly establishing herself as a dual threat on both ends of the floor.
A season‑ending injury curtailed her sophomore year to just five appearances, but the limited time on court left her eager to contribute from the bench and regain her early‑year form.
Versatility at the Heart of the Backcourt
Coach Shauna Green has highlighted Riopedre’s length and adaptability, noting that her skill set will provide depth behind a backcourt that already boasts standout guards such as Destiny Jackson, Gretchen Dolan, Aaliyah Guyton, Jasmine Brown‑Hagger and Maddie Webber.
The program also welcomed LSU transfer Divine Bourrage, further enriching the team’s options and depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Riopedre is expected to see limited minutes early on, serving as a strategic reserve who can shift momentum when called upon, while continuing to develop her role within the Fighting Illini system.
